Gray whale mothers and calves migrating north from the breeding/calving grounds in the lagoons of Baja, California to the feeding grounds in the Chukchi and Bering seas or along the coast of Oregon north to SE Alaska. Here they are hugging the shoreline, swimming through the kelp as they pass the California Big Sur cliffs. Keeping to shallow coastal waters helps them avoid detection and attack by killer whales, who hunt young gray whale calves.
